About

Hi, I'm Hannah. I've never written a blog before, so writing a message to the masses (yes, I'm being optimistic about my blog's soon-to-be popularity) is a bit of an alien concept to me.

I'll start with a bit about myself. I'm  twenty-one, currently a student at The University of Manchester and I study German and Russian. At thirteen I was introduced to the wonders of the German language and that's where our love/hate relationship began. I studied Russian to GCSE level through an intense, two-year course, which took place after school. I then decided to pick it back up again at university from beginners level and I haven't looked back.

There was a time when I toyed with the idea of a science-related degree. I've used the word toyed, but I actually pursued it. I pursued it. A lot. I originally wanted to become a Dentist. That didn't quite work out and because I didn't want to have a constant reminder that I wasn't entirely successful at something that I cared about, I thought I'd give science a wide berth. This was a huge motivation for me to turn back to my other love, languages.

I find German and Russian to be a brilliant combination and the teaching at Manchester is incredible. Never could I have imagined falling back in love with German at such a fast rate, and picking Russian back up has been one of the most interesting challenges that I have ever taken. I would recommend beginners Russian to anyone!

When I'm not engrossed in language books, I enjoy knitting, painting, drawing, writing, customising clothes, nail art (basically anything a bit creative), watching films and reading. I also love makeup. I love everything about it. It's a great form of self-expression. I am also developing an increasing interest in women's rights, and I can imagine living in Russia will also make me a bit feistier when it comes to this. Which brings me to the purpose of this blog..

On September 1st 2013 I will be starting my year abroad.

I will be moving to Tver, Russia followed by St Petersburg, Russia and later during the Summer of 2014 I will be living in Germany for 8 weeks. This blog will be a way for anyone who is interested to follow my travels and crazy Russian antics over the next year.

WHAT I PROMISE TO DELIVER:

  • The adventures of a twenty-something Brit experiencing Russian life
  • An honest and opinionated account of the differences between British and Russian culture
  • A light-hearted writing style peppered with humour
  • An in depth account of Russian food (because I am a huge foodie)
  • Frequent 'Hannah Challenges' that jolt me out of my comfort zone and will no doubt embarrass me into infinity

Peace and Love

XxX
